And the coupe name's revival will spearhead new range of hospital equipment

Ford will resurrect the Probe badge from its back catalogue to use on a cutting-edge medical device for the NHS, TopGear.com understands.

It follows the relaunch of the classic Capri moniker – the Ford Probe’s predecessor – with the aim of refreshing and updating the reputation of the maligned late Eighties/early Nineties coupe.

Insiders report that after a thorough internal investigation exploring possible names to relaunch, Ford archivists presented the idea of reviving the badge not just as a one-off device, but as spearheading a new range of medical equipment under a ‘Probe’ sub-brand.

“We’ve been examining the world of compact, well-priced and stylish medical equipment for some time now, and it’s a world we fully intend to delve into more deeply with our new Probe range of medical equipment,” an insider said.

“The original Probe coupe wasn’t much cop, but it looked half-decent and hung around for ages. So, just like the Capri, we’re going to relaunch it as something entirely different and unrelated to the original to expand our horizons.

“Much like the new Capri, the Probe hospital device will have features that pay tribute to the original coupe’s most recognisable flourishes: pop-up lights, a smooth, aerodynamically efficient form, and a few specialist versions for more particular applications including one with three-spoke internal fans on the base.

“To be honest – and following on from the car it takes its name from – we genuinely have no idea if this’ll work or not, so we’re launching an online portal where you can have a poke about the new Probe and see if it fits.”

Insiders later admitted the Ford Probe medical device will actually be built by Mazda.
