Porsche unveils new 911 GT3 R…

Good news! Porsche has unveiled a brand new 911. If, by brand new, you mean a slightly tweaked version of last year's model.

Porsche has correctly decided its rather brilliant hybrid racer needed more power, and we commend this line of philosophy. The slightly new GT3 R is powered by a 4.0-litre flat six boxer engine pushing out around 480bhp, mated to a pair of electric motors which, at the touch of a Good Button gives a momentary burst of power.

Before, this power was 160bhp. Now it's 200bhp.

You can programme the extra bhp to come automatically via the throttle too, while other changes include mods to the electric flywheel - which spins to 40,000rpm - now housed in a carbon-fibre cell on the passenger side, together with a revised cockpit to make night-driving easier.

Porsche motorsport chief Hartmut Kristen says the goal was maintaining last year's pace, but with less consumption. It's also 50kg lighter, too.
