BMW has built a new 3.0 CSL ‘Hommage’
BMW has built a new version of its classic, gorgeous and downright excellent 1970s 3.0 CSL. It's called the ‘Hommage', and it's so good, you can't see all of it just yet.
Nope, Bee-Em has revealed only the teaser picture above, and a few precious few details ahead of its big reveal at the upcoming Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este on 22 May.
BMW has form at this show, too. In the past we've seen the Z4-based Zagato Coupe, the Pininfarina Gran Lusso V12 super-coupe, the stunning 328 Roadster and of course, the M1 Hommage from 2008.
So what do we know about the new CSL ‘Hommage' concept car? That it's yellow. Nuclear yellow, by the looks of it. It's apparently a "nod to the engineering achievement exemplified by the BMW 3.0 CSL in its lightweight design and performance", and uses "cutting edge materials" to bring the ol' girl into the 21st century.
The body is said to be framed by "striking" air deflectors, a massive roof spoiler, and huge wheel arches, which - judging by what we can see in the teaser - feed quite briliantly into a bloody great big rear spoiler. Well done, BMW. There's lots of carbon fibre too, we're assured, as well as "subtle, finely sculpted surfaces."
We're also assured that the inside is an especially pared back, driver-focused area too, with all elements "absolutely essential". Things like a steering wheel and some pedals, we suspect, would qualify under that.
What's not clear is the powertrain, but as this nuclear yellow, wide-arched concept is a tribute to the original 3.0 CSL, we strongly suspect the new BMW M3 and M4's um, 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged six-pot would be pretty much perfect for this application.
"This model is the BMW Design Team's tribute to the 3.0 CSL, a timeless classic and iconic BMW Coupe from the 1970s," says the Munich carmaker. We've included a picture of it above, because, well, it's great. Roll on 22 May.
