We Have A Winner

From making sure the location is perfect for the type of car you’re shooting, plus using any surrounding landmarks and details to your advantage, there are plenty of ways to make your images stand out.

Canon’s mission was to find a lucky would-be sharpshooter and give them a car photography masterclass at Dunsfold. Canon launched the #CanonCapturedStories competition on Instagram, and quite a few of you got involved with your best pictures of your favourite drive.

There was a Canon EOS 77D DSLR camera and two lenses up for grabs, as well as the masterclass at Dunsfold and the chance to get action shots of one of the most beautiful cars out there. Read on to find out who won this exclusive opportunity, and how it all went down on the track.

Time to focus

On a blazing hot summer’s day at Dunsfold, competition winner David Holly from Belfast was specially flown in with one mission: get perfect shots of a Jaguar F-Type with the shiny new Canon DSLR he’d just won, under the guidance of expert photographer Rod Fountain.

It was a special moment for avid petrolhead David, as he explained: “I’ve been a TopGear follower since the first series and it’s been a big inspiration to me.” Rod began the masterclass by taking David through the car’s angles in a stationary setting, before hunkering down for some dramatic views of the Jag in action.

He was full of praise for Rod’s guidance: “He’s taught me how to use the contours and design of the car against the light and the contrast of the landscapes, where to focus in and where not to, and how you can use additional lighting equipment. This was the first time I’ve used a Canon, and there’s so much intuition without even having to go into photoshop.”

As for the future? David has bags of inspiration for his next shoots, and he couldn’t resist a little pitch of his own: “If TopGear are looking for an additional camera man, I’m happy to volunteer!”
