An icon electrified: meet the Ford Mustang Mach-E

It may not be the obvious choice, but it is the best one. Time to hit the open road once more – this time with zero emissions while driving

Ever since American racing driver Dan Gurney thrashed and throttled the prototype round Watkins Glen in a 1962 demo, the Ford Mustang has been synonymous with adventure and the relentless pushing of boundaries. So much so, when it was officially launched to the public two years later, it didn’t take long for it to star in a high-octane James Bond chase scene in Goldfinger and soon after with Steve McQueen in Bullitt.

The ‘long hood, short deck’ set up, the grille with a galloping stallion emblazoned on it, the scalloped flanks and the three-tiered taillight section became the most recognisable aesthetics of any automobile make and model in history. The Mustang’s story is undeniable, its legacy long secure in the pantheon of the all-time great muscle cars. So, what now?

Well, good news: the Mustang is blazing an equally exhilarating and unique trail in the brave new dawn of electric vehicles, thanks to the Mustang Mach-E®. Yes, it’s packed all the latest tech you’d expect from a market-leading electric SUV, along with Ford’s new BlueCruise1 hands-free motorway technology. But because it’s just as ready for the open road as its petrol-engined forebears, it’s a whole lot of fun, too.

It doesn’t take many glances at the Mustang Mach-E®’s exterior to notice the familial resemblance. This is an EV wearing its heritage on its sleeve, daring to stand out from the crowd.

The bodywork at the front ripples with intent, the lines all flowing towards that inimitable grille. You’ll find stylish 19-inch alloys on the Select model, which upgrade to machined alloys with red brake callipers if you opt for the Premium model, and 20-inch alloys with Brembo brakes and red calipers on the GT version.

The LED headlamps can also be upgraded for adaptive capability, but (of course) the signature Mustang taillights come as standard on all models. Meanwhile, on the inside, the black Onyx Full Sensico Trim, available perforated with red trim on the Premium models, keeps things beautifully sleek and subtle. The GT model also boasts performance seats with suede inserts & GT embossing.

Mustang Mach-E® drivers can now benefit from the first technology of its kind in Europe thanks to Ford BlueCruise1, the latest innovation in its Advanced Driver Assistance technology. Let’s face it, it makes perfect sense that a car built for cross-country odysseys should make it as easy as possible for you to relax as the miles tick by.

Available across endless miles of designated ‘Blue Zones’ across the UK, BlueCruise1 allows you to take your hands off the wheel while keeping your eyes firmly on the road ahead. The technology constantly monitors the road and other drivers around you, and the network continues to update automatically in real time.

Indeed, Ford is so confident in this new driving experience, that it’s offering you a 90-day free trial to enjoy it for yourself, with a subscription of £17.99 a month thereafter2.

  • Someone charging their Ford Mustang Mach-E

The topic of range is – quite rightly – never far from the conversation when it comes to EVs. Happily, the Select model’s 72kWh battery can achieve up to 292 miles3, but if you want more, there’s always the 91kWh Premium RWD model, which can deliver up to 372 miles4. That means if you started your journey in London, that could get you to Hadrian’s Wall and beyond.

Better still, the Select and Premium versions can also charge from 10 to 80 per cent in just 33 and 45 minutes respectively5, so you’ll never be hanging around waiting for too long.

There are plenty more techy touches to make your life either easier or more fun, with Alexa connectivity built inand wireless phone charging as standard. Sick of opening doors? The E-Latch system recognises your key fob as you approach and automatically illuminates a door button that you touch to open.

Drive Modes also allow you to adjust the engine sounds, optional ambient lighting and even responsiveness of the vehicle between three modes: Active, Whisper and – because this is, after all, a Mustang – Untamed. So, if you’re ready to gallop boldly into the future, you need this all-electric thoroughbred in your life.
